Sonny Landham -- Part 4 of 4

Sonny developed a reputation while making this film.  He was a heavy drinker and often became "drunk angry" and physically dangerous.  The studio hired a guard who's job was to stay near Sonny.  The guard wasn't there to protect Sonny.  No, the guard was there to protect the rest of the cast and crew from Sonny's rages.  

Years of heavy drinking eventually took its toll on Sonny.  In his 60s he developed some serious problems with his heart and that ended his action hero roles.  In 2016 both of Sonny's legs were amputated due to poor circulation.  Sonny died on 17 August 2017 of congestive heart failure.  He was 76 years old.
