I know. We just took down the Easter decorations and here it is Dave Martin Day at MFBT. Where does the time go?
Dave Martin met noted photographer Alonzo Hanagan (aka, Lon of NY) in the late 1940s. Lon introduced him to what would become known as classic male physique photography -- capturing images of naked men.
In 1951 Martin opened a studio in San Francisco and began photographing athletes from the local colleges and universities, military men and men in law enforcement. Martin photographed his models in black and white in both the studio and outdoors in the bay area. He is credited for creating the first physique nude photo using the Golden Gate bridge as a backdrop.

First up is Charlie Wall who looks like he could use a tube of Clearasil. I doubt he had any problems getting a date on Saturday night.
I have read many times that Dave Martin photographed Cops and law enforcement. Do you know of any specific Martin models who were police officers.? I really like to know?
ReplyDeleteI don't have any Martin photos of models who were in law enforcement and I don't recall ever seeing one, now that I think about it.
DeleteSupposedly a few San Francisco cops posed Nude for Martin in the 1950s and 1960s. I have never found them but I have read this from several sources about Dave Martin.
DeleteI have heard that he had a few models from law enforcement in the bay area as well. Those photos were apparently kept under lock and key to protect the model's livelihoods. The only documented cases I know of were those involving Douglas Juleff and his model Wendell Meyer of the Detroit Police Dept. in 1955, Juleff was arrested and Meyer lost his career. (photo depicted Meyer in full erection with his nightstick used for size comparison) Another case involved model Norman Tousley of the Alameda Fire Dept. also in 1955. He faced losing his job but won out due to vague language in his employment contract. source Detroit Free Press & Oakland Tribune. -Rj
ReplyDeleteWhat would be the use of keeping the models under lock & key?If you are going to model then you lose your privacy. TOM JANUARY was a Cop and a Member of the Vice Unit in Los Angeles who posed Nude for Pat Milo in 1962.! Supposedly he approached Milo about modeling nude. I just figured a city as super liberal as San Francisco had to have a few Cops who posed Nude even in the 1950s and 1960s.
