Maybe not as popular a model as others were in Bellas' stable of men. Daugherty appeared only once in Male Figure vol. 33 and you could only order three series of photographs of him. -Rj
TY for explaining that. I never have been able to find Ray Daugherty in a front pose showing his face. Did Ray ever pose fully frontal nude for Bruce Bellas? Or was it all Posing Strap for RAY.?
Male Figure vol. 33 shows Daugherty's face and frontal aspect, in a posing pouch of course. As far as full nudes, that is hard to say in Daugherty's case. He would have to be willing to do so, he may not have. I have never seen full nudes of Daugherty, but who knows, every year estate sales come up with never-before-seen full nudes. Bellas is known to have photographed full-frontal nudes of some of his models, but not for publication or for sale in the mails for very obvious legal reasons at that time. Bellas did however offer full frontal nudes of some of his models to select clients in person, I would be certain, since he was in Southern California, he had some celebrity and wealthy clients. Bellas traveled across country from Texas to Utah (physique models and cowboys), the Calgary Stampede in Canada (more cowboys) and New Orleans for Mardi Gras (the costumed revelers and some physique models) so he had more clients to visit and sell full nudes during those travels. Later in the early 70s, due to legalization, Bellas sold full nudes of models he had photographed in the 50's and 60's through the mails. Hope this helps. -Rj
Was RAY DAUGHTERTY on the cover of Male Figure Vol. 33 holding a Gun in a red Posing Pouch? TY for explaining this to me it was very helpful and shows you are extrememely well informed and kind to tolerate the likes of me.
No, that model is Blackie Preston and Bellas offered him in 8 photosets. Ray Daugherty is not on any of the covers of Male Figure. (some physique models didn't mind being in the physique magazines as long as they were not on the front cover for everyone to see at the local newsstand, so as to not offend their families. Keep in mind in the 50s and 60's appearances were everything) Ray Daugherty is featured in 6 B&W images and 1 color image on 5 pages. He has red hair and a youthful face. Bellas describes him thus: 19 years old, 6' 2" tall, 195 pounds, in high school threw the discus and put the shot, bodybuilding as hobby and of Swedish-Irish descent. -Rj
TY I should have known that was Blackie Preston as he worked in the dark room for Bruce Bellas for several years. There are plenty of photos out there of Blackie. There are very few photos of Ray Daugherty and most vintage beefcake blogs have zero pics or mentions of poor Ray.
High quality shot. I'd guess BOLA, too.
ReplyDeleteVery nice!
ReplyDeleteRay Daugherty was 19 when he posed for Bruce Bellas in 1964/65. -Rj
ReplyDeleteRJ do you have any idea why photos of Ray Daugherty by Bruce are so difficult to find.?

DeleteIncredibly well developed and muscular for 19 years old!
ReplyDeleteRay Daugherty a un joli derrière, on peut voir pourquoi Bellas s'est concentré sur cette partie du beau physique de Daugherty.
