Brothers

I know I originally posted this photo way back in my Tumblr days.  The photo was said to be of a pair of lifeguards, but I don't recall if there was any other information.

See comments below.  Jerry tells us this is a photo of brothers Arthur (left) and Oscar Loeser who were members of a Rochester swim team.  Arthur took first place and Oscar took second in a competition in August, 1920.

Just think about that.  Over a century ago.  Geez.

  2. When I posted this picture, I found out that they were not lifeguards, but brothers from a Rochester, NY swim team. I'm not sure if the team was college or municipal. From a Rochester historic photo website: "The Loeser brothers, swimming champions since their early boyhood, took the 1st and 2nd places in their swim contest. Arthur, on the left, was the winner; Oscar, on the right, took second place. August 21, 1920."

    1. Thanks Jerry. That's a lot more information than I recall. I must have missed this when you posted it. Good info!

    2. Glad to help, James. Much of that info came out in the comments discussion, so if you saw the post early on, it might not have been there yet.

  3. Oscar Edward Loeser (1898-1989) and Arthur "Kid" Loeser (1903-1942)
Both were accomplished athletes in high school and college, participating in swimming, diving, waterpolo, football, lacrosse, soccer and track ! As we would say today Total Jocks.
Oscar was an aeronautic engineer who developed and improved equipment used on airships.
Arthur LCDR USN, while serving on the USS Atlanta, the ship was torpedoed and sank at the battle of Guadalcanal, and he was killed.
In 1943 the USS Loeser was named in his honor and sponsored by his widow Marion. -Rj

    1. I just finished reading a memorial page created for Arthur. He was a well accomplished man (academically and athletically) who tragically died too young. Thanks for writing.
