Spanish-Italian?
Steven Spagnolo in the January, 1983 issue of Playgirl magazine. Spagnolo is Italian for Spaniard. (I don't know why I know that.). So, is he an Italian?. Or a Spaniard?
Not unusual, from 1535-1706 Spain ruled Southern Italy and Lombardy, the French ruled from 1799-1814 and the Austrians ruled Venice and the Veneto areas from 1798-1805 & 1815-1866. The Bourbons, the Hapsburgs and Napoleon got around! British wine merchants popularized marsala wine starting in 1773, due to Englands embargo of Spanish sherry. In the 1950's there was even a hamburger chain called Gonzalez's. Hence the occurrence of Spanish, French, Austrian and English surnames in Italian phonebooks. -Rj
