Redfern

Henry Jasper Redfern was a British optician, filmmaker, photographer and a pioneer in X-Ray and radiographic technology in Sheffield, Yorkshire.

In 1914 Redfern enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps where his skills in radiology were used to diagnosis wartime patients.  Due to his longtime exposure to radiation, Redfern would eventually lose all of his fingers.  He died of cancer in 1928, most likely due to this exposure.

Unidentified model, circa 1900.

  1. Beautiful photo! In the early days of radiological research, a lot of people suffered burns and eventually cancers. Unbelievably, xrays and radiation were even marketed as health aids for a time.

  5. The model is not unknown...a simple Google Lens search I did using this photo turned up the result, that the model is wrestler George Dinnie, and the photo was somewhere around 1902.

You'd be surprise what can be turned up by putting an unknown photo into Google Lens, and the results that often turn up on the web.
