George Sheffield was named Mr. Southern California in 1960.
This photo was labeled an AMG photo. At first I had my doubts because George is nude. But if you enlarge this photo you will see the remnants of a posing pouch. So maybe it was from AMG, but someone decided to enhance the view of this handsome and well-stacked man.
See Brian's comments below. It makes more sense that this was one of those photos where the posing pouch was added to the photo so it could be legally sent through the US Post Office. You could scratch off the added pouch -- like you do nowadays with a lottery ticket -- once you received the photo.
Also, if you expand the size of this photo you will see a shadow of Mr. Sheffield's manhood across his thigh. (I'm looking at you Big Dude.) So it looks like this started out as a full nude that was "temporarily" censored until it reached it's new owner. Oddly though, it doesn't look like the shadow was covered in any way. Thanks Brian!
At least you figured out that this one was likely altered. I post photoshopped items regularly without even knowing it and find out in the comments, which is fine.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's altered, but not in the way I thought. See Brian's email below.
DeleteDidn't they sometimes produce photos with the posing pouch being readily scratched off once the buyer received it? This circumvented the law in posting so-called "obscene" photographs. I think this one of those and hasn't been digitally altered at all.
ReplyDeleteYou're closer to what I think actually happened. I have heard of photographers censoring their photos with something the customer could remove when he received it. I don't know if Mizer ever did this, but it wouldn't surprise me.
DeleteThis was confirmed for me by the shadow of George's appendage appearing on his thigh. Big Dude will be ecstatic!
Thanks for helping me on this one!
Yes, this was quite commonly done, and is no doubt the case here. I'm really surprised you haven't heard from Big Dude about this one yet.
DeleteGuys, I really dig this male and The Shadow on his thigh, (to say nothing of what's making The Shadow!) It is fascinating that the alleged pouch was scratched off so nicely. Was Mr. Sheffield comfortable a pot posing in the raw? Would this have been before or after he won his title? And I AM ecstatic! Thanks!
DeleteAnd that SMILE!
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't get "scratched off". I've read that they usually used watercolor inks, which the buyer could wipe off with a damp cloth or sponge, removing the ink. Makes more sense than scratching, which would damage the photo.
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean. I found a picture of George with Billy Hill on another blog site. The strap over George's groin is obviously drawn on. The blogger said he hoped to find a copy of the shot without the drawn in pouch. Man, Sheffield is a major hunk.
DeleteAlso look at his hips...there's little dots/residue where the strings of the pouch have been wiped off. Clearly visible right there on his hips.
